Unipoly | Projects 2007 - 2008

Here are the different projects and campaigns lead by Unipoly during the academic year 07 - 08. For more information on Unipoly, please visit our Student Communities.

Sustainable Tricks
These sustainable tricks are yers handling with themes connected with everyday consumption. For example, water, electrical devices, drugs & cosmetics, garbage, transports, electricity and heating. We have in total twelve different themes on which we give advices on how we could save energy and protect environment. These booklets are released on the campus and now also in some high schools. These items could be easily “transfered” to another association of the WSCSD, we should just have to translate it.

Sustainable Cooking

Once a month Unipoly provides a meal at a cafeteria of the university managed by the students. The meal is always made out of local and season products. The goal is here to make the students aware of the problematic of sustainable development in food trading.

Eco-Festivals - Eco-Hiring
Led in association with the Summit Foundation (www.summit-foundation.org) this project began in different music festivals (amongst other, Caribana, Pal_eo, Montreux Jazz). We ask people to take the commitment of doing a simple gesture in their everyday life that is good for the environment. For example, printing two-sided sheets, taking a plastic bag with them when going to the supermarket instead of taking every time a new one, taking shorter showers, . . . The aim will be then to do a theoretical computation of the energy savings thus completed. This campaign is now also regularly lead on the campus.

SD Education
The group has created two games (SD-Pictionary” and Game of Earth”) that has been presented in different festivals for kids. The goal is now the introduce these two games in primary and secondary schools with explicative documents for the teachers.

Paper Management - Garbage Management
In order to decrease the overconsumption of paper taking place at the university, this group has systematically put notices above every printer explaining how to print two-sided pages or many pages on one sheet. They have moreover sent a survey to the university administration and waiting for the answer. The goal is now to have more paper bin (especially in the library!) on the campus.
The second part of this project is to find solutions with the university administration to have consistently rubbish bins with one part for the rubbish itself, one part for the plastics and one for the paper. This project started early 2008 at EPFL as well.

River Bank - Lake Bank Cleaning

Once or twice a year we gather students to clean a river close to the university. Last year many hundreds kilos of scrap iron and other rubbish were cleaned up.

Press Review
The goal of this project is to collect the articles dealing with sustainable development and ecology. These articles or summaries are then released on http://ecorevue.wordpress.com. The goal is to be regularly informed about this problematic. It can also be used as a data base for research or for preparing a talk.

Rumba
This is a program launched by the EPFL administration aiming to manage more efficiently the resources within EPFL. They asked Unipoly to find motivated members to take part in this program. There is currently two main projects in which we are active.

RumbaEduc
The goal of this campaign is to integrate sustainable development within the courses of every engineer and scientist. For this purpose, surveys are organised and then propositions submitted to the EPFL board.

Bicycle Group
This group stimulates people (students and employees) to come to work by bike. The first measure was to improve the bicycle parking spots on the campus. Moreover, every year EPFL takes part in a national contest called “bike to work”. People can take part in drawing lots if they come more than one day out of two by bike during one month.

Entertainment Meetings
Dinners and BBQs are regularly organised for the members. It represents a good opportunity to meet the other members of the association and develop contacts.

Here are two new projects that have been initiated in April 08 and that will fully start later this year.

Sustainable Camping
This project should take place in July 08. The idea is to go camping a few days in some area close to lake Geneva. During those days, we will be careful about the sustainability of our way of living. Thus, we will move by bike (maybe using one car for the heavy material) and by our food to local farmers. Moreover, we will have talks about different aspects of nowadays sustainable development.

Local Food Supplying
This service is accessible to all our members (this could be extended external people later) and works in the following way. Every week, people can order vegetables and fruits. Then, the person in charge of this project collects all the orders and buy all in once at a local farm (always at the same place). The members next come to Unipoly’s office and pick up what they have ordered. This enable us to have discounts (as we directly buy to the producer) and offer fresh and in season vegetables and fruits to our members.
